which price is ok for you? and where are you going? i’m a thai guy and i appreciate to help you. welcome to bangkok, thailand. hope to see you soon. bye
Welcome to Thailand…Hi ! What province do u like to stay? email me
Booking will be cheaper as all the agents get some discount according to their performance, the more roomnight sold, the more discount provided.
If you just walk in, you will get full rate as the reception have no authority to give any discount to guests.
Have a Great time
If you intend to leave between now and early September most of the hotels will be in Low Season pricing. There will be vacancies available in most places.
If this is the first time in Thailand and you are arriving real late at night – you might want to book one night just so you don’t have to be lugging a bag around late at night. In the morning you can find another nearby place to stay at.
I rarely book ahead of time and when I do it is with an email and no credit card. When I arrive at the hotel I ask what the rate is and if it is cheaper than my quoted price (it does happen from time to time) I sign in at the lower price. If the price is the same or higher “THEN” I remember my previous reservation and get the lower price. Ask first then bring up the reservation price.
After you get to Thailand you can use a telephone to call the next hotel and ask what the prices are. Sometimes you will get a better price if you stay longer. Sometimes you get a better price by asking for a better price! I have been behind a tourist checking in and the clerk says 600 baht and that tourist signs in at that price. I ask the clerk what the price is and she says 600 baht and then I ask if she can do a little better – half the time they do lower the price!
Sample hotels in Bangkok.
If you are real young you might want to consider Khao San Road where you will find lots of other really young travelers.

Slightly more mature and want to use the Skytrain for getting around town you might want to consider Sukhumvit Road, lower number end, near the Nana Skytrain.

If you mention how much you want to pay per night you will get some recommendations. Mention a baht amount not simply cheap or economy because those terms mean different things to different people.
Good luck.

Not very smart Mr James to be walking around Thailand with your luggage going into hotel after hotel looking for a cheap room. They know your looking and will charge more then a web site. Use your smarts and look at the many web sites that offer reservations for hotels in Thailand.
That really depends on whether you like to stay at 5-star hotels & resorts or just a cheap room. If you want to stay at 5-stars and resorts, yeah you should be booking the hotels in advance. Some hotels, will give deep discounts if you book & pay about a month in advance. I did that on a couple of trips to Thailand and saved hundreds of dollars off the regular room rate! IF you stroll in off the street in most cases you will be paying the full, regular room rate. Some of the smaller, cheaper hotels it might not matter.
I’ll give you an example – when I stayed at the Novotel on Siam Square in Bangkok (5-star) I booked and paid for the room one month in advance. I paid $100 a night, which included breakfast for (2). The regular room rate was $200 a night. If you would have strolled in off the street when I was staying there, you wouldn’t have gotten a room as they were completely booked. Nice hotel, by the way.
Now there are times when I just get in the car and drive and we stay wherever….but I’m with a Thai GF so I don’t have to worry about bargaining for the room rate. Sometimes at the really small hotels we can walk in and get a cheap room, but if it is a nicer hotel, then again you are paying the regular full price.
It’s usually better to book ahead (even if it’s just a day or two before) than to walk in.
At least you’ll be sure of the availability and prices are cheaper online than walk in rates. At least you’ll get to “preview” a place with photos and maps etc. Plus you don’t want to troll around Thailand dragging your luggage looking for a place. Another point to remember is a lot of the top guesthouses in Bangkok are booked out in advance so chances of walk-in is virtually zero.
All in all – you’ll pay a bit more as internet gives you cheap last minute discounts but for the convenience and comfort factor – I’d book ahead.
But hey if you’re a free spirit and thrive on spontaneity then by all means…..
Have fun!
I found booking hotel through the internet is cheaper practically almost anywhere. I went to Geneva a couple of years ago during a very big convention and all hotels were booked up. I managed to get a booking through an internet, it was calton hotel and the price wasn’t jacked up during that over booking time.
I didn’t trust it at first, but call the hotel directly and found my booking. So, I guess it’s better be on a safe side.
booking on line must be cheaper surely http://www.discovery-thailand.com
For hotels of 3 star and above, most will be significantly more expensive if you just show up.
Hotel rooms booked at the airport hotel counter are not too bad. Sometimes a little more expensive that pre-booked, but often around the same price. Also, you can book hotel room in travel agencies in Thailand itself. Most travel agents can book a wide variety of hotels all over Thailand for you.
Hoteliers are obliged to sell their rooms at appx 30% above the Travel Agents Rates – or the Travel agents wouldn’t sell their rooms, thus, to get a good deal you need to book online.
I have used this company a few times, very quick, good rates and good service
